See What You Missed! May Copics Class at Photo Scraps

We had a lot of fun this month at Photo Scraps creating these three cards featuring images from Newton’s Nook and mixed media backgrounds. I know I threw everyone for a loop by setting out a variety of Distress Ink pads and letting everyone choose their own colors rather than sticking to the exact colors that I used when I made the store models. However, it was really great to see everyone experiment with color and make the cards an expression of their own creativity.

I have no idea yet what we’ll be doing in the next Copic class, but hopefully more of the same. So watch this space and we’ll see what I can cook up for next month.

In the meantime, all the supplies and Copic colors for this month’s class are listed below.  Hope you have as much fun with these backgrounds and images as we had in class.

Below are the supplies I’ve used for the class projects. Items marked with an asterisk (*) were provided by a store or the manufacturer for free or at a discount. All other items were personally purchased. Read more.

Whiskers by Laurel Burch

I’ve always loved the Laurel Burch feline images – colorful, quirky – just like most of the cats in my life. So when I saw that Stampendous released Whiskers as a stamp, I had to have it. While the image would be beautiful in all sorts of bright Copic inks, today I just didn’t feel like figuring out all of those colors.

Sometimes I’m a lazy colorist. There, I’ve said it.

So instead, I pulled out six shades of Distress Inks in rainbow hues to form a colorful background. I heat embossed the image, added a bit of vellum and attached a die cut “hello” cut from gold foil. And with little effort, I have a card ready to pop in the mail to brighten a friend’s day.

Joy to the World by Penny Black

As hard as it is to believe that summer is actually over, it’s even harder to believe that Thanksgiving and Christmas are just around the corner. I swore that I would start making holiday cards earlier in the year so that it wouldn’t feel like such a rush as the days grew near, but here I am – October – and I’m just now focusing on it. Luckily, I have a stash of stamps (from all the holiday cards I didn’t have time to make last year) to help get me started.

Living in a household of cats, it seems only natural that I gravitate towards the adorable felines from Penny Black. Although we currently have a clowder of tuxedo cats, I find that I often color the Penny Black cats as calicos. The images reminded me of a fluffy calico named Emma who adopted me many years ago. And although she’s long since passed on, I’m reminded of her good-natured, quirky spirit and outgoing personality when I color these stamps.

Friend

Yesterday, I retired from a job that I’ve held for the past thirty-seven years. Like any job, there were days when it just drove me crazy — the commute, the hours, the seemingly endless workload, the stress — you name it! But it was also a place where I worked with a special group of people and made many lasting friendships that I will always hold dear even though I’m not with them every day.

I decided to make a few cards to give to some of my co-workers (because when you’re a card maker that’s what you do!). This is one of the last that I made, but I hope that the message is clear no matter how simple the design.
