Winter 2018: Garland Pixie by Penny Black

Rowhouse Greetings | Garland Pixie by Penny BlackOn a hot summer day, it’s hard to believe that it’s time to start thinking about holiday cards, but here I am with my first of the season! A few years ago, I didn’t make enough and my husband secretly bought a box of cards at Hallmark to send to everyone on his list. Last year, I made sure that he had enough cards to send to his family and friends, but mine got shortchanged. It’s time to get rolling so that we have enough to send out this year.

I’ve loved this image ever since I first saw it as a digital stamp by Maurie Manning. It’s now available as a rubber stamp from Penny Black and that’s the version shown here.

I really experimented here with coloring her skin, layering a lot of different tones to create highlights as well as depth. After watching Sandy Allnock, I started adding violet to my skin tones (usually V20, BV00, or BV01). While Sandy starts with the violet tones, I added them a little further on in the layering because I found that works best for me.

The background combination of BG70, G20, G21 and V20 was mostly a happy accident. I started with BG70 and G20, but as I colored, I found that I needed to deepen the background in order to push it further behind the pixie. I also dabbed it with a piece of terry cloth dampened with colorless blender to add some texture and blend the colors further.

OK – one down. I don’t want to think about how many I have left to go!

Mermaids by Penny Black

Rowhouse Greetings | Mermaids by Penny BlackI’ve been on a mermaid kick lately. I’m teaching a class next month at The Queen’s Ink that features the Laurel Burch Mermaid stamp set by Stampendous. But I’ve had my eye on this set of mermaids by Penny Black for awhile now and decided that it was time to pull them out and start coloring.

If you’ve been following my posts lately, you know that I’ve started mixing other media into my cards along with Copic coloring. I stamped the image on Spectrum Noir’s Ultra Smooth Cardstock and colored the image with the Copic markers noted below. I pulled out some gel pens and (patiently) embellished the mermaid and fish with layers of dots in white, gold, and silver to add texture and hints of glimmer and shine. After the gel ink dried, I taped down my card and the Burlap Layering Stencil to my work surface and applied layers of Distress Ink in Tattered Rose, Dried Marigold, and Scattered Straw to create the background.

In retrospect, shades of aqua and blue might have been more appropriate, but I wanted the stenciled background to complement the gold tones that I had added with the gel pen and stand out from the aqua design paper background. When I was finished stenciling, I scattered a few Dew Drops from Honey Bee Stamps across the card and called it a day!

Happy Together by Penny Black

I woke up this morning with all sorts of good intentions of the things that I was going to get done today. I got up early, got a load of laundry in the washer, and settled in at my desk to organized all of my recent craft purchases (new stamps and dies!). Then it happened – my laptop crashed. To be honest, my laptop was at least 6 years old and had been showing signs of failure for several weeks, but I’d been putting off the expense of a new one. My computer backup is continuous and automatic — at worse, I’d lose a few minutes of work — so I danced pretty close to the edge with this laptop knowing that my files were safe.

However, I forgot how long it takes to reinstate the backup and get all of my software reinstalled.  So it’s now 5PM and while my files are slowly reloading from the backup — 17 hours to go — I’m just now getting back to where I was at 8AM when the day was young and I was giddy with good intentions.

Today, I’m featuring a simple, but serene card featuring one of the images from the Happy Together stamp set by Penny Black. You might remember that a few weeks ago, I posted a card featuring the cacti image included in this set. I kept this card super simple – I didn’t want the background to overwhelm the image – but I couldn’t help but add a touch of whimsy with some polka dot design paper leftover from a previous project.

Hope your day has been more productive than mine!
