Mermaid Shellina by Make It Crafty

Just finished up a new project in celebration of Make It Crafty sponsor week over at the Passionate Paper Creations and Friends Facebook group. This card features the digital image Mermaid Shellina by Make It Crafty. I’m not usually a mermaid person, but something about this image was just captivating and I had to give it a try. I didn’t want the image background to remain white, but wasn’t quite sure what to do with it. So after some experimentation, I decided to use a light color combination to achieve a glow around the central characters.

In my stash, I had a sheet of cardstock from American Crafts – Aqua Wave – that was perfect for the card background, giving the impression of both bubbles and waves. I added a chipboard sentiment, also from Make It Crafty, that I colored with Copic markers in an ombre pattern to coordinate with the colors of my mermaid. After coloring the chipboard, I covered the letters with Nuvo Crystal Drops in Morning Dew to add some gloss. You can achieve the same effect with Ranger’s Glossy Accents.

Hope you enjoyed today’s post. Be sure to leave me a comment and let me know what you think!

I was recently challenged by Rhea Weigand to color this image from Make It Crafty. It’s no secret that I struggle with coloring faces and hair so Rhea purposely picked an image that was far outside the bounds of what I usually color. After several false starts across many days, I finally told myself to just keep going no matter.

Once I got over the initial hurdle, the rest just flowed – selecting colors for the hair, coloring the dress, adding sparkle and shine with Atyou Spica pens. Sometimes you just have to stop overthinking it and just color.

Headless Horseman

Coloring skin and hair is not my forte and frankly I clench every time I have to color an image of a person because I know that it’s going to take several tries before I get results that are at best passable. But the only way to learn how to do it is simply to do it! Rhea Weigand – our fearless leader over at Passionate Paper Creations & Friends – challenged me to color one of the Make it Crafty Halloween witches – specifically Alwina The Good Witch. So I thought – why not? I can color some great folds in that dress when I’m not agonizing over skin and hair.

But then I came across this Halloween image by Make it Crafty and decided that it was the perfect cheeky response to Rhea’s challenge. And as for Alwina, she’ll have to wait her turn and make an appearance in a future post.

Siren of Pearls

I recently joined the design team at Passionate Paper Creations and Friends. Our fearless leader, Rhea Weigand, was my first Copic teacher and I still attend her classes when she teaches at Photo Scraps.

This weekend PPCF is featuring Make It Crafty with a $1 Digi Stamp and a Challenge giveaway. Siren of Pearls will automatically be reduced to $1 over the weekend. Create a project using Siren of Pearls and submit it at Passionate Paper Creations and Friends by Wednesday the 20th for a chance to win one of two $15 Make it Crafty Gift Vouchers.

It’s been awhile since I’ve colored skin and hair so this image was a challenge for me. Rhea suggested straight line blending for the hair and working one section at a time. I’m glad she did because it made coloring the hair much easier to manage.
