Candle Light by Whimsy Stamps

HEY FRIENDS! I’m back with another edition of Nancy and Jill Color Together! If you saw last month’s post, you know that Jill Killeen of Killeen House Studio asked me to participate in a monthly challenge with her where we would color the same image and see how we each interpreted it. This month we are featuring the Candle Light Digital Stamp by Whimsy Stamps. Here’s my interpretation of this month’s image!

FEATURED PRODUCTS

I wanted soft colors and a simple card design and that’s what you see here. I printed the image on Hammermill cardstock and colored it with Copic markers. After coloring the image, I trimmed the panel with the Diagonal Stitched Rectangles die set. I stamped the sentiment from the Hero Arts Merry Christmas Messages stamp set using Versafine ink. The stamp set appears to be retired, but is available on Etsy and Ebay. I cut a A2 cardbase from Neenah Classic Crest, adhered a piece of Princess Pink cardstock cut to size, and assembled the layers as shown.

The coloring was a little tricky because I wanted the colors to be soft yet have some dimension. I underpainted the darker areas of the hat and scarf with V20, V22, V91, and V95 to provide some shape and then glazed with R81, R83 and R85 to get the final color. Since I had so many shades of pink, I used V0000, V20, and V91 to add contour to the snowman rather than my usual cool blue tones. This way, the snow has some shape while reflecting the tones of the hat and scarf. I just kept blending them until I got the softness I wanted.

Similar colors but she went darker, selecting her color palette from the design paper. I love how we can work with the same image, but come out with two different interpretations. Be sure you check out her blog post describing her card and give her post some love!

Enchanted Branches: Nativity by Power Poppy

EVENING EVERYONE! I’m back for day two of the Quiet Christmas Collection release by Power Poppy. This time I’m featuring the Enchanted Branches: Nativity – Angel Digital Stamp Set.

I loved all of the images in this set, but was particularly drawn to the angel. My aunt believed in angels and loved to collect figurines. After she passed, I received a few of her angels and I think of her every time I see an angel image. If she were still among us, I would have sent this card to her for Christmas.

Today’s release includes:

Here I used the digital stamp set so that I could resize the image as desired. The full clear set of Enchanted Branches: Nativity includes multiple ornaments, branches, and sentiments that you can mix and match to create your own scene.

Mossy Pots With Paperwhites by Power Poppy

GOOD EVENING FRIENDS! It’s the moment you’ve been waiting for – the new holiday release by Power Poppy! There will be two collections in this release. The first collection will be released October 23rd to October 27th. The second collection is scheduled to be released November 12th to 16th. And before you ask – the images will be available as both digital stamps and clear polymer sets.

We’re starting off tonight with the first stamp from Collection One:

The clear stamp set features two images of potted paperwhites. Here, I’m using the digital version of the third image featuring a paperwhite nestled between ornaments and sprigs of holly. I had planned on using one of the sentiments in the set, but once I had my card together, it was easier to stamp one of the sentiments from the Cozy Cupfuls clear stamp set.

Step by Step for Mossy Pots with Paperwhites

  • Cut card base from heavy weight white cardstock (110#) measuring 4.25″ x 11″ and score at 5.5″ for a top fold card.
  • Cut two pieces of medium weight white cardstock (80#) measuring 3.5″ x 4.25″ and 1.5″ x 4.25″.
  • Cut two pieces of coordinating design cardstock to 3.25″ x 4.25″ and .75″ x 4.25″. Here I used a double sided cardstock so I automatically had a coordinating pattern!
  • Adhere smaller design cardstock piece to smaller white cardstock piece, leaving roughly a 1/8″ border on the bottom only. Adhere to card base roughly 1/4″ from bottom of card.
  • Adhere larger design cardstock piece to middle of larger white cardstock piece. You should have roughly a 1/8″ border top and bottom. Adhere to card base roughly 3/4″ from top of card. It will slightly overlap with the previous piece.
  • Stamp sentiment in upper right corner of card base above the layers in a black pigment ink.
  • Print digital image on white Copic friendly cardstock and color with Copic markers. See marker list and coloring notes below.
  • Fussy cut colored image and apply foam adhesive squares to the back.
  • Adhere colored image to die cut doily tag as shown.
  • Adhere image to front of card as shown.

Coloring Notes for Mossy Pots with Paperwhites

COPICS: BV20, BG11, BG15, BG18, BG32 (teal ornament); BV20, Y21, Y23. Y26, Y28 (gold ornament); BV20, R35, R37 (berries); YG03, YG17, YG67 (holly leaves); BV20, YG01, YG03, Y000, Y21 (paperwhite); BV20, BV23 (shadows)

  • When coloring the ornaments, start with the lightest color in the combination (either BG11 or Y21) and drawn the circles for the reflections. I do this first so that I remember to include them. Then use the lightest color to apply a base coat to the rest of the ornament.
  • You will notice that I used BV20 in both ornaments to help get extra depth of color and enhance the roundness of the ornaments. Once you have applied the base coat, use BV20 in the darkest areas to help deepen the contours. You can apply your medium and dark tones overtop. You may need to reapply the BV20, and your light, medium and dark tones to get a good blend.
  • On your last coloring pass, add the darkest tones (either BG18 or Y28) only as needed in the deepest areas. Blend out only as necessary with the remaining colors to get a smooth blend.

GOOD AFTERNOON FRIENDS! It’s Labor Day here in the US and we’re having a quiet day at home. I decided that I’m going to take time today to work on my colored pencil skills. That’s assuming I have any. Coloring with Copic markers came easily to me but I really struggle with colored pencils. And I’ve tried a lot of different brands. I have a full set of Prismacolors and partial sets of Polychromos and Luminance pencils. But still I struggle. So I signed up for Sandy Allnock’s jump start class for colored pencils and I’m going to work on some of the exercises today. I can’t say enough good things about Sandy – she’s a fabulous artist and I love her coloring videos. If you’re not familiar with her work, check out her YouTube channel.

Today’s Project

Coloring the Image

I created the scene by merging two digital images by Mo’s Digital Pencil: Sing Joy and Winter Window. The compiled image was printed on Hammermill Color Copy Cover [AZ] and colored with Copic markers.

Yes, I used a lot of markers because the image had a lot of different elements – skin, hair, clothing plus architectural elements such as bricks, windows, etc. But if you look closely at the Copic list below in the supplies, you’ll see that I repeated several markers across the image. The skin tones reappear in the fur of the cat and the bricks. The colors from the dress are repeated in the mittens and the window frames. The colors in the window panes are used for cast shadows. I did this so that the color scheme has an overall cohesiveness rather than a bunch of random colors jumbled together.

Finishing the Project

Once the coloring was complete, I used the Antique Frames die set by Penny Black to trim the image. I selected one of the stamps from the Christmas Cheer stamp set by Penny Black [AZ] as the sentiment using Verafine Clare in Nocturne [SBC] and heat embossing it with Nuvo Crystal Clear Embossing Powder [SBC | SP]. Since there were already a lot of colors in the image, I mounted the image on Grout Gray Card Stock by My Favorite Things [MFT] using craft foam for added dimension.
