GOOD AFTERNOON FRIENDS! It’s Labor Day here in the US and we’re having a quiet day at home. I decided that I’m going to take time today to work on my colored pencil skills. That’s assuming I have any. Coloring with Copic markers came easily to me but I really struggle with colored pencils. And I’ve tried a lot of different brands. I have a full set of Prismacolors and partial sets of Polychromos and Luminance pencils. But still I struggle. So I signed up for Sandy Allnock’s jump start class for colored pencils and I’m going to work on some of the exercises today. I can’t say enough good things about Sandy – she’s a fabulous artist and I love her coloring videos. If you’re not familiar with her work, check out her YouTube channel.

Today’s Project

Coloring the Image

I created the scene by merging two digital images by Mo’s Digital Pencil: Sing Joy and Winter Window. The compiled image was printed on Hammermill Color Copy Cover [AZ] and colored with Copic markers.

Yes, I used a lot of markers because the image had a lot of different elements – skin, hair, clothing plus architectural elements such as bricks, windows, etc. But if you look closely at the Copic list below in the supplies, you’ll see that I repeated several markers across the image. The skin tones reappear in the fur of the cat and the bricks. The colors from the dress are repeated in the mittens and the window frames. The colors in the window panes are used for cast shadows. I did this so that the color scheme has an overall cohesiveness rather than a bunch of random colors jumbled together.

Finishing the Project

Once the coloring was complete, I used the Antique Frames die set by Penny Black to trim the image. I selected one of the stamps from the Christmas Cheer stamp set by Penny Black [AZ] as the sentiment using Verafine Clare in Nocturne [SBC] and heat embossing it with Nuvo Crystal Clear Embossing Powder [SBC | SP]. Since there were already a lot of colors in the image, I mounted the image on Grout Gray Card Stock by My Favorite Things [MFT] using craft foam for added dimension.

GOOD MORNING FRIENDS! I’m back today with another holiday card featuring a digital stamp from Mo’s Digital Pencil. I’ve long been a fan of Maurie Manning and I have many of her (still to be colored) images in my stash. She’s an award winning children’s book author and illustrator and I’m thrilled that she shares her art as digital stamps on her site – Mo’s Digital Pencil – and as cling stamps by Penny Black.

The image was printed on X-Press It Blending Card [AZ] and colored with Copic markers (see list below). Afterwards, I used the medium die in the Nordic Frames die set [GR] from The Greetery to trim the image layer. I backed it with a piece of craft foam [AZ] for dimension and set it aside.

For the background, I cut a piece of Blue Yonder Prestige Cardstock (MFT) to A2 size. I stenciled the background using the Petite Snow Stencil [NN] from Newton’s Nook and Glitz Glitter Gel in White [GKD] from Gina K. Design. It added interest and texture to the background without distracting from the central image.

Tall Cake by Mo’s Digital Pencil

GOOD MORNING FRIENDS! Another short and sweet post because today is my mother’s 92nd birthday. And if there was ever an occasion that requires a card then this is it! My husband and I will take her out to lunch later today and my niece will take her out tomorrow so she’ll have a weekend of celebrations.

For today’s card, I used Tall Cake Digital Stamp by Mo’s Digital Pencil. This image is also available as a cling stamp from Penny Black (see supply list below).

To be honest, the image kind of reminded me of myself. Many years ago, my grandmother spent her 89th birthday in the hospital so I decided that she had to have a homemade birthday cake to celebrate the day. I used a boxed cake mix so in theory nothing much could go wrong, but I got distracted and forgot to add one of the required ingredients before I baked the cake. The cake never rose while baking so each layer was barely 3/4 inch when done. To add insult to injury, the cake actually sunk further while cooling so the layers looked like pancakes. My grandmother was a fabulous cook, so needless to say that cake was trashed and I started over again. Even with a boxed mix, anything that can go wrong will go wrong.

The image was colored with Copic markers – all the colors including the combinations for the rainbow frosting are given below. For the background I used the City Buildings stencil from The Crafters Workshop with Distress Ink in Antique Linen, Tattered Rose, and Tea Dye. The sentiment was stamped using VersaFine Clair Ink followed by heat embossing with clear embossing powder. A few enamel dots finished it off!

Spring Fairy Puddle by Mo’s Digital Pencil

GOOD AFTERNOON FRIENDS! This post is going to be short and sweet. I’m running errands before I head off to my parents’ house this afternoon. If it’s Tuesday, then it must be pizza day and we can’t miss that! When I’m not there, I have to pre-order their Tuesday pizza for delivery, but today, we’ll go out for our pizza fix.

I’m still playing around with some digital images from Mo Manning. Today’s project features the Spring Fairy Puddle digital stamp because who can resist coloring a fairy riding a frog? Obviously I can’t so I’ll just drop this here for your enjoyment!

I toyed with the idea of creating some sort of water splash for the background. As many of you know, I can’t draw a straight line with a ruler so creating something free hand is definitely a bad idea. I often use pointillism to create backgrounds and decided that I could mimic water with shades of blue and blue green. So my frog got a watery background with no drawing required on my part.

Baby Fairy Amanita by Mo’s Digital Pencil

GOOD AFTERNOON FRIENDS! It’s been awhile since I posted anything new (outside of class announcements) so I made a point of sitting down this morning and coloring just for fun.

It’s no secret that I’m a fan of Mo Manning’s digital images. Today’s image – Baby Fairy Arminata – is also available as a clear stamp from Penny Black (see links below). I’ve been eyeing this image for awhile and it gave me an opportunity to try out some new Copic combinations.

I also made a few mistakes along the way. In class, my students seem determined to color perfectly on the first try, so I remind them that you learn from mistakes, not from perfection. And that was certainly the case with the card.

For the skin, I started with a combination used by Sandy Allnock – YR30, YR000, YR26. It looked great on her sample sheet, but didn’t blend as well for me. So I substituted E93 for YR000 and had better results. Which just goes to show that all those Copic combinations you see on Pinterest are really just suggestions – you have to modify and substitute as necessary to make them work for you.

I knew that I wanted a rosy color for the dress and flower petals. I also didn’t want either to get too dark. I started by underpainting the deepest areas with B32 followed by a blend of R43, R81, and RV00 (a beautiful rosy blend used by Debbie Olson). I ended up adding a little R46 to add more definition to the folds and the deepest areas of the flower petals.

I underpainted the mushroom cap with C1, C3, and C5 and then added R46 and R24. Underpainting with the cool grays helped me get some depth without relying on really dark reds.

I had intended on stamping the sentiment on the image directly, but when I was putting the card together, the top right corner picked up some ink from a previous project. I couldn’t remove it remove with a sand eraser so I extended the background a little further to cover some of the damaged spot. I added a small sentiment from the Summer Berries clear stamp set by Power Poppy.
