Laurel Burch Mermaid Fish by Stampendous

I’m following up today with the supply list from the second card that I taught at Tuesday’s Copic class at The Queen’s Ink. This one features another Laurel Burch image – the Mermaid Fish stamp set from Stampendous. This is one of those iconic Laurel Burch images that you could probably do in just about any color combination as long as it’s bright. Stampendous provides a coloring guide for the Laurel Burch images which I usually look at as a starting point to select a few colors to help get me started.

Once again, I used Dylusions mixed media card as my base, blending from dark to light with Distress Oxides in Blueprint Sketch and Salty Ocean. I spritzed the paper with water and then blotted it with paper towel to add a little texture. Once the background was dry, I used the waves stamp included in the set for the background, stamping with Versamark and heat embossing with Gold Detail Embossing Powder from Ranger. I stamped the mermaid and fish images onto X-Press It Blending Card and colored with the Copic markers listed below. When complete, I used the coordinating dies to cut the mermaid and fish and adhered them to the base with foam squares. I added a few dew drop embellishments from Honey Bee Stamps to add a little dimension and sparkle.

I’ll be back at the Queen’s Ink on Tuesday, July 31st to color some of the fabulous Laurel Burch horses. Come join us! You can register online or call the store at (301) 497-9449.

Laurel Burch Leopard Jungle by Stampendous

I’ve amassed a rather large collection of Laurel Burch stamps from Stampendous so I’ve been slowly working my way through them, either coloring them on my own or using them in classes with my students. The image featured here – Leopard Jungle – was one that I used yesterday in my Copic class at The Queen’s Ink.

I decided that I didn’t want to always teach a traditional coloring class – one where the majority of the card was either colored with Copic markers or technique driven (how to color wood, how to color water, how to add texture, etc.). Since I’ve been exploring mixed media, I decided to include my students on my journey. Luckily, they’ve been enthusiastic about joining me on this path.

I’ve also amassed a stockpile of stencils, Distress Inks pads, and jars of Nuvo Embellishment Mousse and managed to use a little of each in this card! I used Dylusions Mixed Media Cardstock as the base and blended Distress Oxides from bottom to top using Peacock Feathers, Twisted Citron, Spiced Marmalade, Candied Apple. For blending, one of my students recommended the Nuvo Blending Sponges, which I find much easier to use than the round Ranger Mini Blending Tool. After the inks were dry, I used a palette knife to apply Nuvo Embellishment Mousse over the stencil. This added a smooth, shimmery background with just a hint of color.

The image was stamped on Copic X-Press It paper and colored using the markers listed below. I kept the coloring fairly simple since there was already a lot going on visually between the image itself and the stenciled background. Once the coloring was completed, I fussy cut the image and adhered it to the stenciled base using Thin 3-D Foam Squares by Scrapbook Adhesives.

Stay tuned – the Laurel Burch Mermaid is coming up next!

Butterflies and More Butterflies!

Today I’m back with the details on two cards that were available yesterday at Queen’s Ink Art du Jour. We had a great group throughout the day yesterday and I ran out of card kits before the end of the event. Next Art du Jour will be held on Tuesday, June 5th. I haven’t decided yet what I’ll make, but I suspect that it will have a summer beach theme.

Yesterday’s cards were all about the butterflies. For the first card, I created with a colorful version of Laurel Burch’s Flutterbye using a few non traditional colors for butterflies and Laurel Burch! At one point, I was asked how I decide on what colors to use. In the case of Laurel Burch images, Stampendous provides a coloring guide so I usually pick one or two colors from the guide and go from there. For the second card, I pulled out all of the butterfly stamps included in the Indigo Cats stamp set to create a cheery and colorful scene. The sentiments for both cards are from Penny Black.

So with no further ado – here the supply list for the projects. And stay tuned – my next Copic class at The Queen’s Ink will be on Tuesday, June 26th. Card models are on display in the store and the details will be announced shortly!
