Santa Claus by Simon Says Stamp

HEY FRIENDS! Got something a little different today. Although I love coloring images, it can be time consuming, especially if you need to make a bunch of cards. And let’s face it, Copic coloring can feel intimidating when you first start out. So I looked through my stash and pulled out a couple of die sets where I could use my Copics as accents rather than the central focus. Today’s card features the Santa Claus wafer die set from Simon Says Stamp. As always, I’ve linked supplies with compensated affiliate links used where possible at no cost to you.

FEATURED PRODUCTS:

Santa Claus is the main feature on this card so I’ll start with him! I used the Santa Claus Wafer Die to cut the pieces and the solid background from Hammermill cardstock. I used my Copic markers to color the hat, face, eyes, and nose. Once the pieces were colored, I assembled them by gluing each piece in place on the solid background using Multi Medium Matte Glue. After a few false starts, I found that the pieces went together best if I started with the beard and worked my way up to the pom-pom.

To add some dimension, I cut the pom-pom, trim and mustache a second time from scrap white cardstock and glued them into place. I decided that I wanted the stars to be gold, so I initially tried coloring them with a gold gel pen, but in the end, I cut them out again from a scrap piece of gold metallic cardstock from the Tim Holtz Idea-ology Metallic Kraft 8×8 Paper Pad. I added foam adhesive squares to the back and set it aside to work on the background.

For the background, I used one of the Blanket Stitch Rectangle Dies to trim a piece of Hammermill cardstock. I selected a sentiment from the Joy to You and Yours stamp set and stamped it along the bottom using Versafine ink. I applied foam tape to the back for dimension.

Next I used Red Spellbinders Glimmer Foil and the Plaid Tidings Glimmer Foil Plate to foil a piece of black cardstock trimmed to 4 x 5.25 inches. I cut a piece of red cardstock and adhered it to an A2 cardbase cut from Neenah cardstock. I assembled the layers as shown.

This is a large stamp set so my card is actual 5″ x 7″ so that all the elements would fit. I stamped the images on Hammermill cardstock using Hero Arts Intense Black Ink. The mouse is colored with Copic markers (see list below).

You can purchase either the stamp and die bundle or the stamp alone. I didn’t have the coordinating dies so I used my Brother Scan and Cut. I should have paid more attention to the screen because I accidently cut off the poor mouse’s whiskers, but luckily he’s too busy chasing stars to notice.

For the background I ink blended Distress Oxides in Black Soot, Uncharted Mariner, Mermaid Lagoon, and Salvaged Patina on Canson Bristol Smooth. Afterwards, I used the Swirling Stars Die from Tim Holtz/Sizzix to create the starry background. I stamped one of the sentiments from the set using Versafine and heat set it with clear embossing powder. Once I had all of the elements, I assembled the layers as shown.

Saturday was our first snowfall of the season. Not really much accumulation, but enough to remind me that winter is here. Despite a major kitchen renovation a couple of years ago, we still have issues with freezing pipes. So dipping temperatures means pulling out the space heater and letting the kitchen faucet drip to prevent any catastrophes. Although the snow is lovely, we’re also on high alert to make sure that our pipes stay intact.

We’ve started decorating the house for the holidays- lights in the flower box, candles in the windows, and a big, beautiful wreath on the door – but unlike many of our neighbors, we have yet to put up the tree. Our living room is small, but somehow we’ll fit a fully decorated tree and fourteen people in here for Christmas Eve dinner. However, some decluttering needs to happen before the tree comes up from the basement and I have to finish up coloring projects for that to happen.

In the meantime, I’ve been coloring snow and polar bears for holiday cards – part of getting into the Christmas spirit. You may have noticed that I’m teaching a class next week that features the Polar Bear Pals stamp set by My Favorite Things. Polar bears are quick and easy to color and can be done with a limited number of markers. Obviously, there’s no white Copic marker, so you “color” white by coloring the shadows, emphasizing contours and depth. I start with the lightest warm gray to map out the shadows and then add layers of the darker grays to create the contours. I completed the shadows with a light wash of E30 to make the grays even warmer. Throw in some miscellaneous colors for the packages and you have another holiday card ready to cheer someone’s day.

Now that Thanksgiving has passed, it’s time to get serious about making holiday cards. Last year, my husband went out and bought cards because I didn’t get enough ready in time for him to send out. This year, I am determined to have some ready for him to send out.

So I’ve got a production line going – so far ten cards (five variations on a design) are stamped, colored, glued, and ready to go. This is the first of the designs featuring the Jingle All the Way stamp set (with coordinating dies) from My Favorite Things. I love the whimsy of this stamp set and paired it with an equally whimsical paper by Doodlebug.

I may show the other variations in later posts. Or not! Got to have a few surprises to put in the mail.

Welcome back to Rowhouse Greetings! I’m here with another new digital release from Power Poppy called Autumn’s Opulence. You can tell that Marcella had bouquets on the brain – she put this stamp together just before her wedding. Mum’s definitely the word when you color up this opulent fall bouquet — three mums, to be precise. Add in a mixture of fall favorites like Asters, Daisies, Oak Leaves, and Berries, and you have a large-scale image that’s ideal when used on big, bold cards! The set also includes two autumn sentiments.

When designing my card, I cropped the image, using just the lower portion of the stamp. The result is still as exuberant as the full image. It’s so easy to get overwhelmed when coloring bold images like this. I break it down by coloring all of the same type – all the berries, all the asters, just the leaves, etc.  I also try to carry over colors from one element to the next to help tie them together. For example, the yellows and red in the mums and berries are repeated in the oak leaves and flower centers. In the end, it all comes together in one fabulous mix of colors for the fall season.
