Soothing Sympathy by Power Poppy

Sympathy cards are always tough to make and not exactly a card that one keeps on hand. So here are a few ideas for cards from a class that I taught several months ago at Photo Scraps. This set of cards features the Soothing Sympathy clear stamp set from Power Poppy. The sentiments lend themselves to sympathy cards, but the images can certainly be used for other types of cards.

January Art du Jour at the Queen’s Ink featuring RubberMoon Stamps

I spent last Tuesday at The Queen’s Ink participating in my first Art du Jour. This is an event offered each month where you come by the store, relax, and make a variety of cards, tags, and ATCs. I offered two cards featuring images and sentiments from RubberMoon Stamps. These images are so unique and fun, perfect for cards, art journaling, tags, and other projects. I love the simplicity of the images as well as the paired down font of the sentiments.

I thought my Art du Jour participants might be beginners to Copic coloring so I didn’t do a lot of detail coloring in the faces. Obviously, the quirky nature of these images lend them to more extensive shading around the eyes, but I opted to keep it simple.

Va Voom by Penny Black

Sometimes you see an image that you just know that you have to color. That’s how I felt about Va Voom by Penny Black. Every time I stopped by The Queen’s Ink, I’d picked up the stamp and then put it back down. Picked it up. Put it back. For weeks. Finally, I decided that it was a sign – I needed to color this stamp. So the next time I picked it up, it went home with me.

This image has such an exuberance that it needed bright colors. Frankly, I loved the way it was colored on the stamp packaging so I just decided to go with the flow. Sometimes it’s nice to just color without worrying about color schemes (although I did modify – albeit slightly – the colors of the flag). For the sentiment, I added one of the new Letter It clear stamp sets by Ranger.

A note about the coloring – that B34 in the list of colors for the scooter is not a typo. I’ve been experimenting with underpainting – applying in a base color for shadows and depth before overlaying it with the final color (in this case R37 and then R35). I think it gives a more realistic dimension to the curve of the scooter and is certainly easier to blend than using an even darker red like R39. I’m still experimenting with the technique, but liking the end results. If you want to see the technique in action, take a look at the beautiful work of Amy Shulke of Vanilla Arts Co.

So, is there an image that you absolutely have to color (but haven’t yet)? Apparently there’s now vacancy at the top of my list!

Rosé All Day by Power Poppy

Rowhouse Greetings | Rose All Day by Power PoppyMarcella has big plans for the Power Poppy Instant Garden and the news is exciting! Each month’s digital download will have a theme – a color story – featuring images that include groupings of plants, insects, birds, and various little “props” for a scene to challenge the colorist.

The theme for January is “Rosé All Day” — a new digital image featuring flowers that are naturally reds, pinks, and whites such as Roses, Redbud branches, and Cyclamen hederifolium. Marcella has added in a few paint brushes and a colored pencil, along with a ladybug and bumblebees.  Think of it as a way to expand your skills and push your coloring boundaries.

Here, I’m pushing my own coloring boundaries by trying some no line coloring. Still a work in progress and not quite ready for prime time, but who knows? With a little more practice ….

In the meantime, stop on over at the Power Poppy blog and take a look at what the other Instant Gardeners have in store for you. We’re celebrating the release of this image with Kathy Racoosin at The Daily Marker to help kick off the 30 Day Coloring Challenge!
