GOOD MORNING FRIENDS! The sun has been shining here the past few days and I’m cautiously optimistic that spring is on its way. Although rumor has it that the temperatures are going to plunge next week. 🙁
I’ve been spending a lot of time with my parents lately. At their age, it seems like there are doctor appointments every week, not to mention all the trips to the grocery store, bank, drugstore, etc. necessary to keep their household running. My crafting time has been limited and out of necessity, I’ve had to focus on either designing cards for future classes or preparing materials for upcoming classes. Although I’m already behind on preparing for next month’s classes, I decided to take time today to make a card just for the sake of making one. Not one that I plan on teaching or giving to someone for a special occasion. Just something that I could put together quickly to get the creative mojo flowing.
I looked through my stash of recent purchases and realized that I had a bit of a theme going, having recently purchased both the My Type stamp set by Newton’s Nook and the Typewriter Text Background by My Favorite Things. So I decided to just go with it.
I worked through my project as follows:
Stamp the typewriter image from the My Type set onto Spectrum Noir Ultra Smooth Cardstock with Amalgam Ink in Jet Black by Gina K. Designs.
Add the “Hello” sentiment with Distress Archival Ink in Picked Raspberry by Ranger.
Color the image Copic markers. Upon completion, fussy cut the image and set it aside.
Die cut a piece of Neenah 80# cardstock using the largest die in the Zig Zag Rectangle Stackables by Lawn Fawn.
Place the Typewriter Text Background stamp face up on your media mat and lightly inked a small area with Amalgam Ink in Warm Glow. Place your die cut card stock on the inked stamp and lightly rubbed the area that you want to be stamped.
Select and arrange the desired sentiments from the Sending You stamp set from Honey Bee stamps. Stamp with Versamark ink in Onyx Black and immediately cover with Nuvo Clear Fine Detail Embossing Powder. Heat emboss the sentiment.
Adhere the typewriter image to the front with foam tape.
Adhere the background layer to the card base with foam tape or craft foam to add dimension.
Embellish with sequins, enamel dots, Nuvo drops, etc. as desired. Notice my studied attempt to be random!
OK – lots of steps, but it really does come together quickly!

Just finished another wild, crazy and slightly chaotic class at Photo Scraps. Did we go into overtime? Well of course we did! But as one of my students noted, at least I finished before the store closed!
We covered a lot of techniques and hopefully I gave you a lot to think about. I want to pause for a moment here to talk about marker selection. When you are just starting out, the array of Copic colors is overwhelming. Before you go shopping, take a moment to get a basic understanding of the Copic color system. Then think about what you want to color. If you’re going to be coloring flowers, you’ll need at least one green or yellow/green combination for leaves and foliage as well as yellow, pink and/or red combinations for the flowers. If you going to color people, you’ll need markers for skin tones, hair color, and clothing. I started off with the intent of making Christmas cards, so my initial collection included lots of reds, greens, and yellows.
When you first start out, everyone buys all the pretty colors and if you look at your markers, I bet you have a lot of pretty pinks, blues, and greens. But if you want to have some depth in your coloring, you need to buy the muddy colors, the colors that you think that you might never use.
To get you started, I’m going to make it easy for you by telling you flat out that if you don’t own Copic markers BV20 and BV23, you need to drop everything right now and go out and buy them. These markers magically add depth and dimension to your coloring and you need to have them in your collection. If you don’t believe me, take another look at those snowman in the first card. They’re not all standing shoulder to shoulder. Some are stepped a little forward and some are stepped slightly back. To be honest, I used BV20, but I could have added BV23 for a more dramatic effect.
(P.S.: I don’t work for Copic – I just love these markers!).
Just a note: The supplies listed below reflect those used for the original class models. In class, we substituted Nuvo Glimmer paste in Moonstone in place Tacky-When-Dry Gel Medium and Tim Holtz Distress Stickles in Clear Rock Candy.
